F*ck The Scale
F*ck the Scale
Don’t get us wrong — we have an InBody scanner at Train716.
We use it. We value it. It gives us data.
But it’s just that — data.
Not a scoreboard. Not a measure of your worth.
And definitely not the only indicator of progress.
If the number on the scale dictates your mood, motivation, or self-worth… it’s time for a mindset shift.
I’ve Been There
Back in high school, I was overweight. When I finally decided to “get in shape,” I went all in on cardio, barely ate, and lived for the scale to move. I trained to shrink myself — not to grow stronger.
Everything changed when I discovered Olympic weightlifting. I stopped chasing a number and started chasing performance. I didn’t overhaul my nutrition overnight, but it naturally started to shift. I didn’t want to diet — I wanted to fuel my training.
And guess what? My body composition improved… without obsessing over the scale.
And After 10 Years of Coaching…
After a decade of coaching, I’ve seen the same story play out again and again.
The clients who succeed — and stay consistent — are the ones who shift their mindset from “weight loss” to performance goals.
As soon as someone starts training for a faster 5K, a heavier deadlift, or their first clean, everything else starts to align.
They show up more often.
They push harder in workouts.
They begin to fuel instead of restrict.
And they start to enjoy the process — not just endure it.
Progress becomes measurable in strength, skill, and confidence. And suddenly, the scale doesn’t carry so much power anymore.
Stop Training for a Number. Start Training for a Feeling.
Chasing a lower number on the scale rarely leads to long-term success.
Why? Because it’s vague, emotional, and often disconnected from how your body actually feels or performs.
Instead — train for something that lights you up:
- Want to improve your 5K time?
- Want to PR your deadlift? (Because deadlifts are awesome.)
- Want to finally learn how to do power cleans? (Because… also awesome.)
When your goals are performance-based, everything else starts to align.
You recover better.
You start eating to support the work.
You sleep deeper.
You carry yourself with confidence.
And yeah — your body starts changing too.
What Really Happens When You Train for Performance
- You eat for fuel, not punishment.
That protein goal starts making sense. You’re not dieting — you’re rebuilding. - You show up more consistently.
Goals like “add 20 lbs to my squat” or “run a sub-30 5K” keep you motivated when the scale stalls. - You celebrate wins that matter.
Reps. PRs. Skill progression. Energy. Confidence. Not just pounds lost. - You stop quitting when the number doesn’t budge.
Because now you’ve got proof of progress beyond the mirror.
Performance First. Body Change Follows.
If you want to change your body — change your goals.
The way you train, eat, and think will follow.
Train for something exciting. Something real. Something you can feel.
- That first power clean? Life-changing.
- Hitting 200 lbs on your deadlift? You’ll walk taller.
- Running a mile without stopping? There’s nothing like that win.
